On Tuesday, I introduced a group of undergraduate Criminal Justice majors to the concepts of Motivational Interviewing, and spoke about possible job opportunities where they may utilize these skills. I invited them to do a simple internet search for "Criminal Justice Degree, Motivational Interviewing" to learn how these skills may be useful on the job market. They seemed excited about the chance to explore some career options that they had not previously considered:
Substance Abuse Prevention/ Treatment
Employment Specialist/ Vocation Counselor
Domestic Violence Advocate
Though we were a little slow to warm up, by the end of our time together, the students were sharing personal stories about their own behavior change challenges. I was impressed by their openness and bravery, and touched that they trust me (a stranger) with such intimate stories.
